N2N Gallery is extremely pleased to invite all aspiring and established artists in Abu Dhabi to work with and learn from the Crimean artist Olga Grigorieva-Klimova, finely educated from the Crimean Art College and the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture. She lives and works in Crimea and since 2007, she has actively participated in the republican (Crimean), Russian and all of the Ukrainian exhibitions. Her works are displayed in the Kiev Museum of Modern Art, as well as kept in private collections in Ukraine, Russia, the United States of America, Taiwan, Poland, Romania, China, Switzerland and Great Britain.

The professional approach of the master class is designed to acquaint and deepen knowledge of the basic principles of painting, drawing, composition, tonal and colour relations. You will work from scratch and that will allow you to master the understanding of the whole vision of nature or any image. As a basis for the realistic still life, you will use an abstract coloured acrylic substrate inculcating your ideas of colours and colour combinations with appropriate guidance and suggestions from the master. The peculiarity of still life on a colourful abstract substrate is that the artist, in a sense, becomes the co-author of his own canvas shaping it with unpredictability and uniqueness. Something to get excited about is that you shall get introduced with a new acrylic instrument – an acrylic marker, which will allow you to combine graphic and pictorial languages in your work and thereby express the graphic lines with the picturesque colour spot. You shall also examine how objects that make up a still-life influence each other, how lighting sculpts the shape of objects, as well as, the basic form-building concepts like glare, light, semitone, shadow and reflex; additionally, learn the thermal laws according to which we create the illusion of volume or plane.

Olga’s art is not just extraordinary, but precarious and remarkable! As a humble artist, she doesn’t limit herself in any strata of medium or ideas and thus allowing her to create the miracle in her works. We indubitably believe in her art and absolutely expect an enlightening and distinctive experience for our students.

The culmination of the course will be a final masterpiece, which will be exhibited as a part of a group exhibition in the N2N Gallery on the graduation day!

Master Class Structure:

1st day:

Production of acrylic colors in 0.2 l containers, which is necessary for creating an abstract substrate. You shall then pursue the performance of the abstract substrate with the master’s guidance. In the remaining time, the master will give a demonstration on portraying still life, meanwhile explaining and answering your queries regarding the technique.

The following days:

The master explains the general laws of composition, balance, golden section, subordination to the main secondary, etc., using the example of a specific formulation. Having received the information, you will work on your sketches and form a frame on paper in appropriation to your future work on the pre-prepared canvas. Next, you shall draw a tonal sketch owing to the composition and tone you have apprehended.

If required, you are welcome to do a color sketch on a primed cardboard, laying out the basic color and tonal relations of the still life, so as to contemplate and exercise before working on your canvas.

Next, you shall tone the working space in the color of the prepared imprimatur.

Staging your work in this manner aids you to avoid possible errors in the composition and color of your painting. After performing the sketch, you start drawing the still life on the prepared canvas. Likewise, you shall be instructed individually by the master

Upon completion, you may begin your next still life painting, carefully following the above stages.
